Congratulations to Franchise Owner Ian Wilson on his one-year anniversary with home services franchise Screenmobile! Operating in the Champaign-Charleston area of Illinois, Ian has been able to use his Screenmobile franchise to enrich his community with high-quality and affordable window screen repair services.

In this video, Ian takes us through a reflection of his past year working at Screenmobile, explaining what he has learned, his past, and what advice he would give to his past self.

“Hello everyone, my name is Ian Wilson. I’m the Franchise Owner of Screenmobile of Champaign in East Central Illinois.”

Ian first takes us through what surprised him the most as a Franchise Owner navigating how to run his business as a first-year business owner. “What has been the biggest surprise this past year? How tough it is to run a business,” Ian claimed. “It’s not all about just going out and doing work for customers; it’s a lot of paperwork, it’s a lot of marketing, it’s a lot of talking to people, it’s a lot of decision-making. That is what has been the biggest surprise.”

Coming from a different background without experience running his own business, Ian found that the home services franchise required a different type of approach and effort. “I was from a management background and it was definitely harder to do a single man operation like this than it was to run a hundred million dollar store actually.”

“On a scale from 1 to 10 how happy are you, and why? That’s a tough question because I think things are better. I would say maybe a 7 or an 8, but if you had asked me eight months ago, it would have been lower than that because it takes a while. It took me a while to get going, but it’s getting better every month. I’ve had my two best months in the last two months. I was very afraid in the beginning because the phone wasn’t really ringing a lot, but I had to get out there and really make my own business. It’s definitely way better than it was, so I would say an 8 where I’m at right now.”

Ian also described how our home services franchise is focused around working to provide for our customers. “How would you describe your job to a kid? Well, we fix screens,” Ian stated. “The way I would put it is that we take care of problems for customers that they don’t have to worry themselves about. We come to you, you call us and we take it from there, and that’s what I tell my son. This service is not around me at all, it’s a very new service, but definitely just getting out there and taking care of the customer’s needs without them having to worry about anything.”

Ian also took us through what the most memorable part of his Franchise Owner training process was, which were the people he met. “What do you remember the most about training? It was really the guys I met. Actually, first, it was the 120 degrees outside, that was first. But then the guys that I met. Everybody at Screenmobile, franchisees that were with me, we still keep in touch. Pretty frequently they help me out a lot.”

Lastly, Ian told us the advice he would give his past self. “If I had to give myself advice one year ago, what would it be? Don’t stress out. Business will come. It’s not going to be easy and you’re going to have to do some things that are a little uncomfortable. I got a commercial on TV, I was not very comfortable at it, but it actually paid off. It’s been one of my better producers. Just believe in yourself, business will come, you just got to go out there and get it.”
